It’s more than just a move

One of the many reasons I enjoy my working as a senior move manager is because of the people meet and work with. Most of our clients are older and have had the most interesting and inspiring lives. I recently met an amazing woman originally from Yugoslavia who immigrated to the US in the 1950s, after spending her teenage years and early adulthood in a Russian labor camp. She met her future husband and he too, lost most of his family during the Holocaust. Together, they came to the US and built a wonderful home and life together - he as a scientist and she as a mother and master gardener.

Last year, I had the pleasure of working with a retired US army colonel and his wife, whose service dated back to World War II. His wife was a historian of the Hudson Valley and between the two, every encounter was like having a personal history lesson.

I regularly meet couples like this - who have been together for 50 plus years and while sorting through a lifetime of belongings, learn about their personal histories and often, the incredible hardships they have endured. It has certainly taught me a thing or two about fortitude and commitment.

The tagline for the National Association of Senior Move Managers is "it's more than just a move." It's so true. As much as we help clients through a difficult life passage, they too enrich our lives - certainly putting things into perspective. Something we can all use a bit more of in the world today.
